CLIP FROM SHOW
But, before we start geeking out about our guest, Adam Beechen, I gotta say a few things about the podcast in general. Not gonna lie, it feels very good to be back. While nearly every podcast host might say something like that at the head of a show, Above and Batman Beyond makes it pretty easy to come back. When it comes to gauging listener feedback, podcasts are a tough nut to crack, especially when they’re new. Let’s be real. It’s not like our show is being broadcast on some major network. You typically need a decent amount of episodes and enough reviews to even be rated on iTunes. It takes time. Facebook, however, has been the complete Bizarro version of the iTunes feedback experience. Check out our page: @BatmanBeyondPodcast. In under a month, we’ve already racked up…followers and that’s with only a few low cost promotions. Thanks so much to those who have liked and followed! It feels good that so far, hundreds of people from all over the English speaking world already like the idea of our show. So, Here’s hoping to building it up even more.
Which is a perfect segway to my next thing here. If Facebook is any indicator, it’s obvious people want more episodes of Above and Batman Beyond. So now we just need to convert that social media energy into some iTunes 5 star review energy. To those who have like our page already and to all Beyond fans: Please write us a 5 star review on iTunes as well. Along with your Facebook like, we also truly depend on iTunes 5 star reviews in order to keep the show going–continuing to bring you (FOR FREE!) all these great interviews from real creators of Batman Beyond. DC Comics giants like Dan Jurgens and Bernard Chang, animation and comic creators like Adam Beechen, and more! Thanks again so much for the Facebook likes and social media follows!
So, let’s get into today’s guest. First of all, I really liked this guy. Aside from how awesome it is talking with an industry pro like Adam Beechen, he’s also just a fun, witty, fellow geek to talk with. It was a real pleasure and I can’t wait to have him on again. As you’ll soon hear, Adam Beechen has been a professional writer of TV and comics for over 2 decades. Started off his career writing TV drama of all things, he then moved on to animation, boasting cartoon credits such as The Batman, Rugrats, Wild Thornberries, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Rocket Power, and many more. Adam Beechen also has a graphic novel of his own creation titled Hench that is currently in development for TV as well. Adam was even there for iconic film events, working the Austin screening of Pulp Fiction, with Tarantino in the theater! Who does that? Not a career to sneeze at. However, this seasoned writer of geek content for the screen has also written some seriously well crafted comics for Batman Beyond. Adam Beechen is here today for Part 1 of our conversation about his 2011 Batman Beyond comic Industrial Revolution. The book is stunning, quite literally from cover to cover.
Aside from the compelling and adventurous writing from today’s guest, Industrial Revolution also features art and covers that cannot be left unspoken. From DCs legendary Darwyn Cooke, we get a variant cover on which this book may fairly be judged. Darwyn surrounds Terry McGinnis/Batman with his rogues gallery of Beyond villains. All the heavy hitting bad guys of Neo Gotham are there. And, the quality and feel of this cover lives up to every bit of work from Darwyn’s unmistakable stylistic genius. Speaking of covers, to quote our very guest Adam Beechen, “Dustin’s a genius.” In our conversation, Adam and I gushed over the cover work by Dustin Nguyen. Throughout the book, Dustin gives us visually arresting covers for the individual issues of Industrial Revolution. Finally, the bulk of the art in this book is from Ryan Benjamin. Who, aside from having a most beautiful last name, builds a strong and fitting visual dimension for Beechen’s storytelling. For Industrial Revolution, Benjamin and Beechen really put together some fun and powerful legends of Batman’s future.
Before the interview, I do need to preview some things you guys definitely want to hear about. Again, today is only Part 1 of my interview/conversation with Batman Beyond comic writer, Adam Beechen. This means that you neeeeed to stay tuned for next episode if you want to hear our entire conversation about Industrial Revolution, and a whole bunch of other stuff. Much like my interview last episode with DCs Dan Jurgens, Beechen and I went deeep behind the scenes of comic creation, the writing process in general, writing for TV, and of course, the Bat and the Bat Beyond. So, please subscribe and stay tuned for Part 2 of my conversation with Adam Beechen. But, wait, there’s more! But really, there is. Following our Beechen 2 parter, we have a nice call back guest, if you will, to our first official episode. For Episode 1, we interviewed the writer of DC’s current Batman Beyond Rebirth comics, Dan Jurgens. In case that name doessn’t ring a bell, this is the man responsible for the Death of Superman, and the birth of Booster Gold, the creator Doomsday, people. But now, ladies and gentlemen, it would only be fitting to have the eyes of the operation join us as well. Am I right? Well, I think I am. And that’s all that matters, right? Uh, ok. Anyway, yes, folks, if you know your current DC Beyond comics, you know that Bernard Chang is the man responsible for the knock you on your Beyond ass art of these books. The words of Jurgens have been discussed and he said he’ll return for another episode. But, now we’ll have the artist with us. The one that draws us to the book in the first place (pun intended). Bernard Chang will soon be joining us either for episode 4 or episode 5, right here on Above and Batman Beyond. Subscribe on iTunes, SoundCloud, and find new episodes at BatmanBeyondPodcast.com
The last pre-interview plug of the day is for our other bodacious CBI podcast, Geek News Bat News. Oh yea. Another Batman podcast from Comic Book Intl. Last episode, we interviewed DC Comics’ Matthew K. Manning, writer of the current Batman/TMNT Adventures! If you’ve never seen this book, it’s a crossover of my entire childhood, both major cartoon franchises for me as a kid: Animated Series Batman meets the Ninja Turtles. Doesn’t get much more early 90s than that. Check out that last episode for Part 1 of that interview and make sure to subscribe as well, so you don’t miss the epic conclusion in Part 2. Again, the name of the show is Geek News Bat News. Subscribe on iTunes, SoundCloud and PodBean. New episodes also available at GeekNewsBatNews.com. So, cowabunga, Bat fans!
Without further adieu, here is my Skype interview with Adam Beechen, writer of animation, TV and comics, here today to talk about his Batman Beyond comic Industrial Revolution from DC.
INTERVIEW (Recorded only)
