Welcome, Neo Gothamites to Above and Beyond: The ONLY podcast devoted entirely to Batman Beyond. Today is our first official episode. And, for episode 1, we couldn’t have a better guest. Mr. Dan Jurgens is with us, writer of Batman Beyond Rebirth comics over at DC.
Welcome, Neo Gothamites to Above and Beyond: The ONLY podcast devoted entirely to Batman Beyond. My name is Benjamin David, your schway host and Managing Editor here at Comic Book International. This is it, people! Our first official episode, and we do mean official. Today’s interview is not only perfect for our very Batman Beyond podcast, but he’s also a major deal over at DC Comics. Long time writer and artist, Mr. Dan Jurgens, is with us to talk about his current run of Batman Beyond in DC’s Rebirth; as well as his own character creation of DC’s Booster Gold, the world of comics in general, his characters on TV, movies and much, much more.
Listening into the future of this episode, this is what you will hear from Mr. Dan Jurgens: (SOUND CLIP)
Saying I am excited for this episode is the understatement of geek history. I do want to jump into the interview in just a minute so I’ll do some commentary and plugs afterward. I also have a recurring segment for the show that I want to introduce after the interview as well. So stay tuned after this awesome Dan Jurgens podcast interview, for the segment after. It’s a lot of fun!
Before the interview, I do want to preview something pretty bodacious. If you like interviews from major comic creators, like the show you’re listening to now, check out our upcoming episode of our other CBI podcast, called Geek News Bat News: A Batman Podcast. After our holiday of independence, I’ll be having an interview/podcast conversation with DC Comics’ Matthew K. Manning, writer of the current Batman/TMNT Adventures! If you’ve never seen this book, it’s a crossover of my entire childhood, both major cartoon franchises for me as a kid: Animated Series Batman meets the Ninja Turtles. Doesn’t get much more early 90s than that. So, please keep your Bat ears open for the upcoming episode. It should be posted about 2 weeks from now. Again, my interview with Matthew K. Manning will be over at our Geek News Bat News: A Batman Podcast. Much like the show you’re listening to now, Geek News Bat News is available on iTunes and Soundcloud. Please subscribe to both shows! The other podcast also has its own site, GeekNewsBatNews.com. And, we have our own site as well: BatmanBeyondPodcast.com
The last thing I’ll say briefly before the interview is how much fun and how much of a true honor it was, talking directly to a creator of one of my favorite TV/comic book properties of all time: Batman Beyond. For a bonus, as an aspiring creator myself, we also touched on some things about writing and creating that were very inspiring to me personally.
Without further adieu, here is my Skype interview with Dan Jurgens, writer and artist at DC Comics, currently writing Batman Beyond for DC’s Rebirth:
Ugh! Are you kidding me? How great was that? Can you see now why I was so excited for today’s show? What better guest could we get to launch Above and Batman Beyond? Dan Jurgens is the man at the helm of today’s Batman Beyond Rebirth universe; and for day one of our show, we got the man himself. Not to brag, but pretty awesome for us. Which brings me to our huge thanks from all of us here at the show, ComicBookIntl and from me personally. As I said in our talk, it really does mean the world to me having Dan come on and talk about something that means so much to me: Batman Beyond. I mean, come on, it’s Dan Jurgens. As he mentioned, the guy’s worked with pretty much all the biggest comic creators in the industry. And, yes, with most of the biggest characters at DC as well.
And that writing advice and life advice for creators? Pure gold. I loved his super simple, super true point about plain old listening. If you can’t listen to the people giving you feedback about your work, then you’re not gonna get far. So. Darn. True.
Back in the day, Batman Beyond taught us that the only way to make Batman even cooler is to just imagine more of him in the future. Much the same, the only way to make Jurgens better is by having more Jurgens on in the future. Dan and I spoke briefly after the interview, and I was overjoyed to hear that he did want to come back sometime for future episodes. This was along with some very kind words he had to say about the podcast, and to me personally. As I said before, means the world.
TERRY BLIPS OFF DANA
So, I did want to do something else fun today, by introducing one of our show’s segments. It’s called, “Terry blips off Dana.” If you know the franchise of Batman Beyond, you know that a constant struggle for our hero, Terry McGinnis/Batman is maintaining a relationship with his girlfriend, Dana Tan. When Neo Gotham needs Batman, Terry always “blips” her off (which is future talk for standing her up), causing ongoing problems for the teenage couple. While this might seem like a trope for most superheroes, girl problems serve a special purpose in the world of Beyond. But, before we get into the deeper meaning behind Terry McGinnis’ relationship issues, let’s get into today’s Terry blips off Dana.
Today’s Terry blips actually comes from the first episode I found that inspired this segment. I was watching the episode of Batman Beyond titled Rats, which is where the segment kinda just hit me. Considering how many times Terry blips off Dana, including this one, I’m sure we’ll have plenty of more opportunities for this as a regular segment. Again, today’s Terry blips comes from Rats, in which Dana feels let down for the millionth time by Terry. Perfect timing, a secret admiring stalker leaves flowers for Dana, making her think it was Terry apologizing. Soon enough, we find out Dana’s stalker is a mutated human rat who has been obsessing over Dana from the sewers for a long period of time. The man-rat (yea, I said it) holds Dana hostage and Batman Beyond, of course, saves the day. But, again, while Batman might’ve saved the day, Terry still blips off Dana.
As I mentioned, girl problems serve a special purpose in the world of Beyond. Don’t forget: This is also the world of Batman we’re in right now. Bruce Way, as the show teaches us, was never able to maintain a long lasting, healthy relationship with a woman. He ends up alone. In Beyond, however, the show’s creators deliberately wanted to contrast Bruce’s lonely future with that of hope for Terry’s future. Hope for true happiness. To not end up alone. So, as dopey as this segment is, it’s always fun to watch Terry struggle between being the Bat Beyond, but also not blip off Dana.
Before we end the show, I did want to promote/plug a few things:
